The research offered an analysis of the relationship between the main characters Sanan and Paskal and their ways of navigating through social and cultural dynamics in their romantic relationship. The study used qualitative methods and textual analysis to explore insight into the emotional challenges of romantic relationships by investigating the nature of love that the protagonist experienced. The research revealed that the character’s inclination despite being platonic in approach differs from Plato as they were deceiving each other in the guise of love. The author both affirmed and diverged from the Platonic ideal of love: He appeared of the view that love was solely not reserved for the beautiful or physically fit but was experienced regardless of physical appearance; however, the ideal love was experienced only for a short moment. Love eventually became a secondary emotion and selfish interests took precedence.
Momina Afzal Copyright (c) 2024 Journal of English Language, Literature and Education http://jelle.lgu.edu.pk/index.php/jelle/article/view/209 Thu, 07 Mar 2024 00:00:00 +0500 Effectiveness of English Teaching as a Foreign Language (ETFL) in Pakistani Educational Institutions: Exploring Methods and Strategies to Address Challenges http://jelle.lgu.edu.pk/index.php/jelle/article/view/204
This study delves into the effectiveness of English Teaching as a Foreign Language (ETFL) in various educational institutions across Pakistan, with a focus on schools in Lahore, Punjab. The qualitative research method was employed, and interviews were conducted in three different schools. The teachers and students were selected by purposive sampling to gauge the current methods and strategies employed in English language instruction. The initial phase involved posing identical questions to both teachers and students to ensure a comprehensive understanding of perspectives. Subsequently, the inquiry narrowed its focus, repeating the questions for the students exclusively. The research revealed explanatory implications, shedding light on the beliefs and attitudes of language instructors towards the teaching and learning of English as a second language. Additionally, the study proposed practical strategies for students to overcome challenges encountered in their language learning journey. For future research, a comparative analysis of urban and rural educational institutions in different regions of Pakistan may be investigated. Further, potential variations in teaching methods, resources, and challenges faced in diverse educational settings may be explored.
Ghalib Bilal Ahmad Copyright (c) 2024 Journal of English Language, Literature and Education http://jelle.lgu.edu.pk/index.php/jelle/article/view/204 Sun, 17 Mar 2024 00:00:00 +0500 Invigorating The Dislodged Roots in An Unwonted Land: Immigrant Narratives in Jhumpa Lahiri’s Unaccustomed Earth http://jelle.lgu.edu.pk/index.php/jelle/article/view/212
This study aims to explain the challenges faced by immigrants by analysing the short stories written by Jhumpa Lahiri. The organisation of this research study is intended to enable a thorough investigation of immigrant tales in Unaccustomed Earth. Through the framework of Homi K. Bhabha's theory of hybridity, this paper conducts a literary analysis of the stories, investigating themes, characters, and stylistic elements. This study employs the notion of hybridity and its diverse manifestations to investigate how immigrants establish their roots in new territory after relocating and relinquishing their own cultural identity in order to assimilate into a foreign culture. Occasionally, individuals integrate their cultural values with the cultural norms of people from different backgrounds, while maintaining their own ethnicity and cultural identity. At times, people transition from one culture to another and mimic the colonisers or those in positions of power. Consequently, immigrants face several obstacles in their lives. An individual who refuses to adopt or accept the lifestyle, language, religious values, ethnicity, norms, and culture of the host society will have a feeling of alienation from that society. These consequences lead to an individual feeling nostalgia since they are unable to maintain their own cultural identity. The research presented here asserts that individuals must achieve a harmonic balance between their own cultural values and the foreign culture in order to alleviate concerns and challenges such as identity crises, and to flourish in a new setting.
Amna Khalil, Irum Abbas Copyright (c) 2024 Journal of English Language, Literature and Education http://jelle.lgu.edu.pk/index.php/jelle/article/view/212 Thu, 21 Mar 2024 00:00:00 +0500 An Error Analysis of Expository Essay Writing of English as Second Language (ESL) Undergraduate Learners in Pakistan http://jelle.lgu.edu.pk/index.php/jelle/article/view/215
This study focuses on the expository essay writing of undergraduate of English as Second Language (ESL) learners in Pakistan. Further research may include more areas of grammar.
Moizza Ghyas, Hira Sakhawat Copyright (c) 2024 Journal of English Language, Literature and Education http://jelle.lgu.edu.pk/index.php/jelle/article/view/215 Mon, 25 Mar 2024 00:00:00 +0500 Impact of First Language (L1) on Second Language (L2) Pronunciation: A Case Study of Undergraduate ESL Learners in Pakistan http://jelle.lgu.edu.pk/index.php/jelle/article/view/216
Language pronunciation is an indispensable part of the language learning process. It plays a substantial role in enhancing the communicative competence and performance of sound language learners. The learning of pronunciation is a very sensitive and complicated aspect of the English language classroom. However, all L1 students are not equally good at learning pronunciation. The research aims to explore the phonological features of L1 that influence the pronunciation of L2. Similarities and differences between the phonological systems of the L1 and L2 are also part of this study. The study discusses theory and personal observations that classify the influence of L1 on L2. This research is significant because it highlights importance of acquiring the pronunciation of a second language. This study assesses the impact of L1 on the pronunciation of L2 using a quantitative data analysis approach and Transfer Hypothesis Theory. The Transfer Hypothesis Theory suggests that the skills and knowledge acquired in one language can transfer and influence the learning and use of another language. The result of this analysis provides valuable insights into the relationship between L1 and L2 and contributes to our understanding of the Transfer Hypothesis Theory.
Mahnoor Rasheed Copyright (c) 2024 Journal of English Language, Literature and Education http://jelle.lgu.edu.pk/index.php/jelle/article/view/216 Sun, 31 Mar 2024 00:00:00 +0500
